Luxury Escapes: The World’s Best Holidays TV show is back for another season on Saturdays at 6pm on Channel Ten. This time we’ll be taking you even deeper into some of your favourite destinations to discover the food, culture, hotels and locals in places like Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Africa, Paris, Bali and beyond.
Episode one took you to Japan where Shane Jolley sampled whisky, dined in one of the world’s best restaurants, stayed at five-star Hilton hotels, met a master swordsmith and even explored the streets dressed like Batman. If you missed it, here are just some of the highlights.
Part of Japan’s rapid embracing of the modern world is the iconic bullet train known as the Shinkansen. The train carries over 160 million passengers each year and is a great and efficient way to get around the country.
Like many others who visit Japan, Shane travels from Tokyo to Osaka at speeds that reach up to 250km per hour and enjoys the country’s breathtaking scenery along the way.
Osaka is one of the country’s largest and most forward-thinking cities. Known as the ‘nation’s kitchen’, the city is a foodie’s paradise with entertainment and cultural events all year round.
Osaka holds a special place in Shane’s heart as he once lived in the city and this time he returned to stay at the five-star Hilton Osaka. Located in the heart of the city, this modern hotel is warm and hospitable with an understated style. Shane meets with the hotel’s designer Tukio Hashimoto from Hydesign. He says his inspiration behind the hotel was the idea of using frames as a motif and placing different materials inside these frames. He wanted to make the hotel’s design unique and unexpected.

Another craft practised for hundreds of years is sake. Shane heads to Daimon Brewery to meet with Yasutaka Daimon, a 6th generation sake brewer who shared his knowledge of this delicate process. Daimon explained that they have to convert the starchy rice into sugar. To do this, they first polish the rice before washing, soaking and steam it.
Once the starch in the rice is converted into sugar the fermentation process can begin where more rice, water and yeast are added to the mix. This is an 800-year-old method and even in this modern age they are still following what Daimon describes as the ‘old wisdom’.
Shane’s Japanese adventure concludes in Nara. Nara is home to some of Japan’s most spectacular ancient temples, one of which houses the largest bronze Buddha in the world and is one of the most popular spots for visitors to Japan. The Buddhists believed deer were the messengers of the gods and they roam the parks freely in Naru.
