Your complete guide to Koh Samui

The island of Koh Samui on the east coast of Thailand is a haven for honeymooners, families and groups of friends. And with its coral blue waters, white-sand beaches, lush tropical greenery and an array of upscale hotels to choose from, it’s no wonder sunseekers flock here.

The island is easy to get around and offers a pleasant mix of nightlife, dining, beaches and nature. Although Koh Samui has the most visitors of all the Koh islands, there are still many secluded beaches to explore and the island has an ultra laidback vibe.

Getting there

Koh Samui is the biggest island in the Gulf of Thailand, and it has its own international airport. There are no direct flights to Koh Samui from Australia. However, Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways fly several times a day from Phuket or Bangkok to Samui International Airport. Bangkok Airways has slightly more departures per day, and more affordable prices.

The most famous and busiest beach on the island is Chaweng, which is set in a picturesque bay. With many restaurants, shops and bars in the area, it’s perfect for sun lovers who want to have easy access to tropical cocktails. Try Chaweng Noi (meaning little Chaweng) if you want more peace and quiet.
Lamai Beach is the second most popular beach on the island, and is perfect for families.

The great thing about Koh Samui is that there are many secluded beaches around the island, so hire a car or scooter and find your own slice of paradise.

Things to see

The Big Buddha Temple is Koh Samui’s most famous landmark and a must-see, while also on the island is a 12-metre tall golden statue, with views of neighbouring Koh Pha Ngan on the horizon.

The island’s tropical jungle is also worth seeing, with many lakes and waterfalls such as the magnificent Na Muang Waterfalls.

For a day of postcard perfect moments, take a day trip on a boat to Anghong National Park, an archipelago of more than 40 picturesque islands where you can enjoy breathtaking scenery and world-class snorkelling. If you want to discover what Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao have to offer, many cruise companies offer day trips or transfers to these neighbouring islands.

Koh Tao

Things to do

Koh Samui is the perfect island for relaxation and indulging. Amp up the tranquillity by pampering yourself with treatments from the many luxurious yet affordable spas on the island.

If you want shopping, dining and bar hopping, Ban Chaweng is the place, and in the evenings, many bars set up on the actual beach so you can enjoy a drink while listening to the soothing sounds of the ocean.

Bophut Beach

The quaint fisherman’s village of Bophut is well worth a visit. Many restaurants offer on-beach dining, and has freshly caught seafood on the menu. With a much more relaxed vibe than Ban Chaweng, Bophut is the perfect destination for a romantic date night.

The majority of the villages are based on the east coast of the island, but venture out to the less populated western part one night to enjoy the sunset.

Kanda Residences Koh Samui
